Complex canals: why Castlecrag dentists refer
Not every referral is an emergency. Often a careful dentist has judged a tooth too difficult to treat predictably without specialist equipment. What makes a tooth difficult:
- Calcified canals narrowed to a thread
- Sharply curved roots that risk file breakage
- A hidden fourth canal in upper molars
- Access needed through a crown or post
Our endodontic specialists on the Lower North Shore take on these teeth, then hand you back to your dentist.
Why Choose Us
For Castlecrag residents, four things set a specialist endodontist apart.
Difficult anatomy
Calcified, curved and hidden canals are located and shaped under an operating microscope.
Planned with CBCT
A three-dimensional scan maps the root form before a difficult tooth is opened.
Short drive
Edinburgh Road, Alpha Road and Flat Rock Drive reach Crows Nest in 7 to 10 minutes.
IV sedation option
Nervous about treatment? The day surgery across the hall makes IV sedation possible.

Root canal treatment for complex Castlecrag teeth
Endodontics is all we do, so equipment, training and routine centre on saving teeth. Your Castlecrag dentist still places the final crown.
- Advanced canal location and shaping for calcified or missed canals
- Root canal therapy when the pulp is inflamed
- Root end surgery when infection resists treatment from inside
- IV sedation for long or anxious appointments
Precision instruments for a precise job
Treating a calcified or curved canal is a matter of millimetres. Under the dental operating microscope, the faint outline of a calcified canal becomes visible on the chamber floor. Ultrasonic tips uncover the opening, and rotary files follow the natural curve. A 3D CBCT scan beforehand shows the number and curvature of the roots. With a day surgery across the hall, complex cases can be done under IV sedation.
How it Works
Three stages for a Castlecrag patient, from assessment to restored tooth.

Map the tooth
The consultation includes pulp testing, radiographs and, for complex anatomy, a CBCT scan. We show you the images, explain what makes the tooth difficult and set out the likely number of visits.

Locate and clean
Under local anaesthetic and rubber dam, canals are found with the microscope. Rotary files shape them and ultrasonic irrigation disinfects them. Difficult teeth may need two visits with medication between.

Seal and restore
The canals are filled and a core placed so your Castlecrag dentist can crown the tooth promptly. They receive our report and images, and a follow-up radiograph checks healing.

For dentists in Castlecrag
When a Castlecrag patient needs root canal treatment on calcified or curved canals, refer early. Use our referral form and attach periapical radiographs and any CBCT. Like every referring practice in the City of Willoughby, you get an update at each stage. Your patient then comes back to you for the final restoration.

Answers on the drive, bookings, general dentists and antibiotics.
Is Specialist Endo a general dentist for Castlecrag families?
No. We are a specialist practice limited to endodontics, the treatment of the nerve and root inside a tooth. Keep seeing your Castlecrag dentist for check-ups, cleans, fillings and crowns. They can refer you when a tooth needs specialist care.
Which way should I drive from Castlecrag to Specialist Endo?
Head along Edinburgh Road to Alpha Road, then Flat Rock Drive, Brook Street and Albany Street into Crows Nest. Hume Street is off the Pacific Highway. Allow about 7 to 10 minutes outside peak. The council car park on Hume Street is free for two hours.
Can I book directly, or must my Castlecrag dentist refer me?
You can book directly on (02) 9129 0009. A referral is useful, since it brings your radiographs and history with it, yet it is optional. We still write to your dentist after treatment, since they place the final crown or filling.
Will antibiotics fix my tooth infection instead of a root canal?
No. Antibiotics may ease swelling for a while, but they cannot reach bacteria inside a dead pulp. The infection usually returns once the course ends. A root canal clears the source inside the tooth. Antibiotics are kept for specific situations, such as spreading swelling or fever.
What does a CBCT scan show that a normal X-ray misses?
A CBCT scan gives a three-dimensional image of the tooth and surrounding bone. It reveals extra canals, root curvature, root fractures and the true size of an infection at the root tip. Ordinary radiographs flatten all of this into two dimensions.
