Artarmon referrals, from molars to root-tip surgery
Artarmon dentists refer a broad range of cases, from simple to surgical. Typical reasons include:
- A molar with lingering cold pain
- An ache when you lie down
- Infection under an old crowned tooth
- Cracks from clenching or grinding
- A root filling that failed
A conventional root canal settles most of these. Some older root-filled teeth need surgery instead, which is routine for a specialist endodontic practice on the Lower North Shore.

Root canal treatment one stop from Artarmon
Specialist Endo Sydney offers both non-surgical and surgical endodontics at its Crows Nest clinic. For Artarmon patients that commonly includes:
- Specialist root canal therapy for molars with lingering pain
- Apicoectomy when retreating through a crown is unwise
- Root end surgery with a microscope-guided seal
- Cracked tooth treatment and assessment
As always, your own Artarmon dentist completes the crown or restoration afterwards.
Surgery and root canals under the microscope
The root tip is a few millimetres across, so the seal placed there must be precise. The dental operating microscope gives a magnified, well-lit view of the site.
Before surgery, a 3D CBCT scan maps the root, the infection and nearby nerves and sinuses. Surgery can also be done under IV sedation in the day surgery across the hall.
How it Works
From Artarmon to a finished tooth in three stages.

Consultation in Crows Nest
The endodontist reviews your history, tests the tooth and takes radiographs and, where indicated, a CBCT scan. You then hear whether a root canal, a retreatment or surgery is recommended.

Treatment or surgery
Non-surgical treatment usually takes one or two visits under local anaesthetic and the microscope. Surgery is also done under local anaesthetic, with sedation available across the hall.

Restoration and healing
With our report and images in hand, your Artarmon dentist fits the crown or final filling. After surgery, a review X-ray months later checks that the bone at the root tip has healed.
The endodontists Artarmon patients see
Dr Omar Ikram‘s qualifications are BDS (Otago), FRACDS, MClinDent (London), MRD (Edinburgh), FICD and FPFA. The EndoPrep app is one of Dr Ikram’s co-inventions.
Alongside Dr Ikram is Dr Jasmine Holgate (BDent, DClinDent, FICD), also a specialist endodontist. Both work in a clinic purpose-built for endodontics. Day surgery facilities across the hall support surgical and sedation cases. Surgery is planned from a 3D CBCT scan taken on site, so there is no separate imaging trip.

Afterwards you receive the treatment report and radiographs, and you place the definitive restoration.
Artarmon patients ask
Answers on getting here, specialists, the Metro, apicoectomy and grinding.
Where can I get root canal treatment near Artarmon without a car?
At 34 Hume Street, Crows Nest. Take the T1 one stop to St Leonards, then walk about ten minutes along the Pacific Highway and turn into Hume Street. The clinic is Suite 301 on Level 3. Pacific Highway buses are another option.
Is an RCT specialist the same as an endodontist?
Yes. RCT is short for root canal therapy, and the dentists registered as specialists in it are endodontists. Both Dr Omar Ikram and Dr Jasmine Holgate hold that registration, after postgraduate training beyond general dentistry. You can see them with or without a referral.
Is Crows Nest Metro any use from Artarmon?
Not directly, because Artarmon has no Metro station. If you are already in Chatswood, the Metro to Crows Nest is one stop. The clinic is then two minutes from the station. From Artarmon itself, the T1 or driving is simpler.
What is an apicoectomy, and will it hurt?
An apicoectomy removes the root tip and the infected tissue around it, through a small opening in the gum. The root end is then sealed. It is done under local anaesthetic. Some soreness afterwards is normal, and IV sedation is available.
I grind my teeth. Is that why my molar hurts on biting?
Possibly. Clenching and grinding can crack a molar, especially one with a large filling. Cracked teeth often hurt when you release a bite. The endodontist finds the crack under the microscope and advises whether a root filling and a crown can save it.
