When Castle Cove teeth need a specialist
Your dentist may suggest a root canal specialist when a microscope or 3D scan would change the outcome. We provide endodontic care across the Lower North Shore, and typical reasons include:
- A molar with narrow, curved or calcified canals
- An old root filling that has flared up
- Sharp pain when you release a bite
- Infection at the root tip that persists
An assessment does not commit you to treatment.

Root canal treatment for Castle Cove patients
Specialist Endo treats only endodontic problems: the pulp, the canals and the tissue at the root tip. If your Willoughby-area dentist has mentioned any of these, we can help:
- Specialist root canal therapy for pulpitis or abscess
- Endodontic retreatment of a root canal that failed
- Assessment of cracked teeth
- Root end surgery for lesions that persist
Why the equipment matters for your tooth
Molar canals can be narrow, curved and hard to find. The dental operating microscope magnifies and lights the tooth, so an extra canal is less likely to be missed.
CBCT imaging adds a 3D view when it will change the plan. A flat X-ray can hide a curved root or a lesion. For patients who could not sit through treatment awake, the day surgery across the hall allows IV sedation.
How it Works
From Castle Cove to a finished tooth, root canal treatment runs in three steps.

Diagnosis first
Your first appointment is an assessment. We test the tooth, review or take radiographs, and use the microscope and CBCT where needed. You then choose whether to proceed.

Specialist treatment
Local anaesthetic, a rubber dam and the microscope are used throughout. Most teeth need one or two appointments. IV sedation can be booked in advance if you are anxious.

Back to your dentist
Once the canals are filled, the tooth is sealed and your dentist receives a report. They fit the crown or filling that protects the tooth long term.

Dr Jasmine Holgate holds BDent and DClinDent degrees and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Both are registered specialists in endodontics. They work together from a purpose-built clinic at 34 Hume Street, with operating microscopes and CBCT in house.

What Castle Cove patients ask
Practical answers for people making the drive in from Castle Cove.
Is there parking when I drive in from Castle Cove?
Yes. The Hume Street council car park near the clinic offers 2 hours of free parking. It is a short walk from 34 Hume Street. If you are having IV sedation, arrange for someone else to drive you home afterwards.
My root canal failed years ago. Can it be redone?
Often, yes. Endodontic retreatment removes the old filling, then finds any missed or blocked canals under the microscope. The canals are cleaned and sealed again. A CBCT scan helps show why the first treatment failed. Where retreatment is not suitable, root end surgery may be.
What makes an endodontist different from a general dentist?
An endodontist is a dentist who has completed a further three-year postgraduate degree and is registered as a specialist. Dr Ikram and Dr Holgate treat only problems inside the tooth and around the root. They work with operating microscopes and 3D imaging.
I have no car. Can I get from Castle Cove by public transport?
Yes. Catch a bus along Eastern Valley Way to Chatswood. From there, the Metro is one stop to Crows Nest. The clinic is about 2 minutes on foot from Crows Nest station. Allow extra time for the connection at Chatswood.
How can I tell if my tooth is cracked, not just sensitive?
A specialist assessment is the reliable way. We combine bite tests on individual cusps, cold testing and examination under the operating microscope. The microscope shows fracture lines an X-ray can miss. The findings decide whether the tooth can be saved.
